At the end of the first conference day the inaugural Sustainable Food Award reception was hosted at the Mövenpick Hotel Amsterdam City Centre on 7th June 2018.

 

For the first Sustainable Food Award in each of the five categories the winner and the runner-up were announced by Amarjit Sahota and the Ecovia Intelligence team. The finalists have been announced a week earlier. The categories are wide-ranging from ingredients and products to packaging; sustainability pioneers and sustainable leadership were honored too.

 

Aliet Green (Indonesia) is the runner-up with Organic Coconut Sugar for Sustainable Ingredient Award. Certified organic and fair trade, the Organic Coconut Sugar helps empower female growers and creates female employment for sustainable coconut sugar production in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

 

Organic Coconut Sugar, a humble sweetener that can be found in almost every household in Indonesia for centuries and almost all around the world nowadays.
Coconut palms are a tree crop which benefits the environment ecologically. Their cultivation restores damaged soil requiring very little water in the process. Coconut sugar production has minimal effects on the environment compared to the production of sugar cane, which requires a considerable amount of resources.

 

Through offering farmers a fairer price for their coconut sugar, providing them training on Organic and Fair Trade Standards, as well as creating social activities for community members to bond especially female farmers, those who work with Aliet Green experience substantial impacts in both financial and social terms.

 

In addition, Aliet Green has also become the finalist of Sustainability Leadership Award in terms of raw material sourcing, manufacturing process, providing economic impacts for small holders especially female growers and disadvantaged female employment to the communities.
